At les Invalides

The photo gives you some idea of the crowds at les Invalides this morning. I will try to post more on the visit later today. Apparently the Pope has impressed everyone and the visit seems to have energized French Catholics into a reawakening of both national pride and religious conviction. He is now in Lourdes for the 150th anniversary of the appearance of the Virgin to Bernadette Soubirous.

The mass at Lourdes which was televised was really beautiful. One can hear that French is really the Holy Father's second language, and even though he reads from his papers, I think he has the most expression in French (other than German perhaps).
As to the Invalides, what was this ugly plywood behind the Pope? In close-up it looked really inappropriate, like a house in the middle of construction. They couldn't drape something over it?
That picture is amazing!
