Marine Le Pen's Reaction
Update: As you might imagine, the French press has run out of ink. For an interesting perspective on the actual accusation against him, the penal code of New York State, the official definition of "sodomy", and speculation on what could have really happened, see Lawrence Auster. Also, it has occurred to me that he will get off the way Bill Clinton got off - popular opinion will be on his side, especially if there is any evidence, even the slightest, that this was a set-up.
In this video, where we hear only her voice, Marine Le Pen reacts to the arrest of Dominique Strauss-Kahn. She is not surprised and says his pathological behavior towards women has been an open secret for some time. She points out that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but she also feels there will be more revelations concerning his conduct. Even though he still has the right to run as a candidate for the presidency, she believes this incident will put a definitive end to his political career, and may result in his departure from the IMF.
It is lucky, not only for Marine Le Pen, but for France, that this happened. DSK was never an appropriate candidate. His indifference to the civilizational crisis in France, his lack of identity with the French, his uncontrollable urges, his jet-setting life style, his Socialist ideology, are just some of the factors that would have created a huge gulf between himself and the people. I'm sure that many French patriots are rejoicing today.

Update: I have changed the word "viable" to "appropriate" in the last paragraph above. See comment section.

Yes, I admit I was elated when I heard the news, plus a bit of schadenfreud (God forgive me) for this elitist Leftist being arrested on the plane (I wish I had been on that flight, it would have been worth the delay). He was probably the strongest candidate of the Left and would likely have won. Definitely not desirable, but unfortunately I think he was "viable" in terms of being able to win. Ségolène might now have a chance, which means if she beat Aubry, she could then be beaten by Marine in a face-off. But of course this assumes Sarko will not rebound.
Horrible for the victim, and also horrible if he has been falsely accused. But in any case, truly "une chance pour la France". : )
My first reaction : I was elated, then I had a good laugh, then....I realised how shameful, how abasing all this is for France ; of course it will surely rid us of a most undesirable would-be president ; but, whether we like it or not, he is seen as a Frenchman.
And I can't be sure a trap had not been set for DSK ; if so, his mistake is his being unable to see and avoid it.
First, I did not mean to make light of the attack on the woman. If it was a real attack, then she must have been terrified. And when I said he was never a "viable" candidate, I probably used the wrong word. He was never an appropriate candidate for France, because in so many ways he is not an authentic or patriotic Frenchman. He is a playboy and a money man. France needs a patriot.
Of course, he could have won the election, so in that sense he was viable.
Still, it is so much for the best that he is out of the race (and I'm assuming he is out). Royal and Aubry are both weak candidates. However, at this point, my crystal ball is cloudy. Will Sarko beat Aubry? Will Royal beat Sarko? Will Marine make it to the second round?
Eagerly awaiting next chapter.
P.S. The websites are FULL of his former "exploits". Even if this was a set-up, it is best that it happened. Would you want a guy like this in Elysee? Imagine how all those maids would feel! I understand a humorist (whose name escapes me) poked fun of DSK's womanizing on television. He was later dismissed from that TV Channel. I'll try to post on that.
Yes, one must not forget the damage to the image of France, which Marine spoke of as well on the news:

As to the election, there was a poll taken showing Marine would supposedly beat Ségolène Royal in a second round, but not Martine Aubry. Anyway, it is early.
A $3,000 a night hotel room? He's a champagne socialist, alright. Apparently living in luxury that the Sun King himself would envy is OK if you call yourself a socialist and pretend to care about the peasants. Until, of course, one of the peasants refuses to have sex with you.
Sarko must be the happiest man in France today. Imagine him getting that phone call. After 5 minutes, Carla B. asks him what in the world can possibly be so funny.

Oh, and I am rather disinclined to believe the conspiracy theories about this, not because I think Sarko is above such foul play, but because a conspiracy would involve the collusion of the NYPD and, probably, the Obama adminstration. And why would Obama wish to bring down a powerful socialist?
If this woman is telling the truth, she is to be commended for her bravery in speaking out. She is in for a very difficult time because you know his attorneys will sully her reputation as much as possible.

Diane,
The Catholic readers at Le Salon Beige agree with you, for the most part. Christine Boutin, a not-very-reliable spokesperson for Catholics, and a former member of Sarkozy's government has said she believes it was a plot. The readers vehemently disagree with her and question her judgment and her honesty. If I can I will post on it. There are so many articles right now, it's hard to choose.
In truth, even if it were a plot, he has a record a mile long of sexual escapades. No one denies it. Not even the Left. For Boutin to say such a thing can only be attributed to her stupidity, or to her loyalty to Sarkozy (who may for now be standing by DSK). This is all speculation. Keep posted.

sexual escapades or rapes?

Dominique Strauss-Kahn Faces Rape Charges As Another Woman Comes Forward

I cannot say if they were rapes. I have heard about his "partouzes", which are orgies for V.I.P.'s. Actually they are orgies for anybody, but in this case we are talking about the upper crust. The participants in these orgies boasted about them, so they are not rapes.
I have no knowledge of rapes in the normal sense of the word. There is a story online about a young girl who was molested by him a while back. In French law this would be a rape even if penetration was not involved. But I don't have definitive information. There is so much talk now on the web we really have to be careful. Still, as I have said, he is certainly guilty of repeated immoral conduct and would be a most unfortunate choice as a candidate. The Socialists would be stone crazy to put him on the ballot.
So people are suggesting it was a plot ? Do you think Elvis is alive too ? I lived in France long enough to observe the attitude towards women. Pas gentil, ca...
